A Short Goodbye

This is Honey. She is a rescued greyhound from Alabama, and she came into my life about 6 years ago. I know some of you are not dog people (I'm not really, either), so I will save you the sob story. She got sick enough to run out of options this week, and I had the vet euthanize her this morning.

I don't really make it a habit of getting deep into my personal life on this blog. I don't really mind doing it, but I doubt that it is very interesting to anyone but me. What little I do share usually has some bearing on the hobby, but I feel compelled to write about her for a moment. This won't take long.

She was a really good companion. Never barked, never jumped up on anyone, never disobeyed. The only thing she couldn't resist was bacon, even if it was bacon grease on a paper towel, but who COULD resist that? Because my wife and kids are long asleep by the time I start painting, Honey was my constant companion in my office, listening to me swear about pinning right through the foot of a tactical marine or waking me up to go upstairs when I've nodded off with my forehead on a bottle of Boltgun Metal.

If you are considering a dog and you are in this hobby, I recommend that you research rescued greyhounds. They sleep 22 hours per day, and they are very quiet and patient. My heart is absolutely broken today...I don't think I've cried like this in over 30 years. It was the right thing to do, but just so sad. The Emperor Protects.

  2. It's always sad to see a good companion go, but there's at least some solace in knowing she had a better life with you than perhaps most ex-racing dogs do. Good on you for taking her in, and my sympathy on losing her.

  4. Both dogs i've had have been rescues. Morgan, a Rottweiler/Shepherd mix, was the sweetest thing you could ever meet. We had him 7 years, and had to have him euthanized around Christmas this past year. Without him, the house was just so quiet.. We were hound-less for ten days before we couldn't stand it anymore. Mom went out and found Thor, a massive longhair german shepherd who was a rescue. He had been staying with huskies and we barely got any sleep the first month because he had picked up a howling habit from them.
I don't know what I'd do without a dog. "Mans best friend". Whoever coined that one hit it dead on.
