It's been almost THREE years since my last published post. And that should tell you how much time I've had for the hobby since COVID. I've had little to post for several reasons. First, I started an Instagram account for my hobby stuff, but even that has seen very little activity...maybe 20 posts since I created it. The truth is that I was a little put off by 9th. I also help to moderate a very large competitive 40k Facebook group, and while I do not participate directly very often, the tone of everything these days has been a little bit of a motivation leech. I'm sure many of you are the same.</p><p>But I am re-energized! My day job has chilled out a little with some personnel changes, so my work/life balance has stabilized again. And new Kill Team! A complete revamp, and the only thing that is really blatantly stupid is the replacement of units of measure using completely unintuitive shapes instead of Arabic numerals that, oh, ALMOST EVERYONE ELSE IN THE WORLD USES. I can't even really see a sane marketing angle to it.</p><p>But forget that. With the new KT 2021 rules, it's actually realistically feasible to collect, build, convert and paint every single possible unit in the Compendium. And that's exactly what I'm starting, and I'd like you to start with me.</p><p>Now the good news is for most of you who would actually be reading this, you probably already have at least a few units of almost every faction out there. We all have shelves and piles of shame, and I'm pretty confident that you will find a few usable and playable fire teams within your trove of gray sprues. I mean, who doesn't have a couple dozen bloodletters or Cadians sitting around half-painted?</p><p>I'm working on a very simple spreadsheet to keep track of what I am doing, and I will share it in my next post. </p><p>I still prefer 40k, but I'm also a completist, and I can't even tenably collect all the codices let alone even all the units for ONE army. So KT2021 will scratch that itch for me.</p><p>Hashtags and all that to come.</p><p>Oh, and did I mention that there is a time component? And swag? Stay tuned, and thank you for rediscovering this site.<br /></p>Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2100642048696971643.post-10799744154507079962019-02-17T00:17:00.001-06:002019-07-29T00:27:52.275-05:00So you want to be a commission painter<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<div style="font-size: 14px; margin-bottom: 6px;">
<span style="background-color: black;"><span style="color: white;"><br /></span></span></div>
<div style="font-size: 14px; margin-bottom: 6px;">
<span style="background-color: black;"><span style="color: white;">I've noticed quite a few posts on social media lately from people who are considering getting into commission painting. Actually, even in other groups I am part of outside of this hobby, I'm seeing a surge of people considering freelancing as a side hustle or even branching out and making it their day job. Maybe it's the current state of the economy or the maturing of this hobby, but many people are considering monetizing this "thing". </span></span><br />
<span style="background-color: black;"><span style="color: white;"><br /></span></span>
<span style="background-color: black;"><span style="color: white;">A lot of the posts indicate that they have no idea what to charge.</span></span></div>
<div style="font-size: 14px; margin-bottom: 6px;">
</div>
<a name='more'></a><span style="background-color: black;"><span style="color: white;"><br /></span></span>
<br />
<div style="font-size: 14px; margin-bottom: 6px; margin-top: 6px;">
<span style="background-color: black;"><span style="color: white;">I am obviously not a commission painter; in fact, I'm barely even a <i>competent</i> painter, but I do know a bit about side work and freelancing as a copywriter, a graphic designer, a user experience consultant, and as a composer/sound designer. I would like to offer some thoughts that may be helpful to those people trying to evaluate the feasibility of painting on a commission basis. Interspersed will be work from some of my favorite painters for hire. By the way, if you are not up to their level (and professionalism/customer service), you are not going to get top dollar for sure.</span></span></div>
<div style="font-size: 14px; margin-bottom: 6px; margin-top: 6px;">
<span style="background-color: black;"><span style="color: white;">First of all, if you really have no idea, not even a rough inkling, of what you are going to charge, you have put the cart before the horse, and you need to pause while you consider it. Figuring out what it would take to be profitable is not difficult, but if you miss a few variables, you will be very unhappy and possibly panicky as you realize you're in over your head. So here are a few questions that you need to ask yourself, and the answers should factor into your feasibility equation:</span></span></div>
<div style="font-size: 14px; margin-bottom: 6px; margin-top: 6px;">
<span style="background-color: black;"><span style="color: white;"><br /></span></span></div>

</tbody></table>
<div style="font-size: 14px; margin-bottom: 6px; margin-top: 6px;">
<span style="background-color: black;"><span style="color: white;"><b><br />1. What is your financial goal?</b> Are you just trying to make your hobby self-sustaining? Do you just want to cover your monthly expenses? Do you want to make it your career? Knowing clearly what you want to get out of it will dictate many factors associated with working independently on commission. As an example, I don't love working on other people's music...there's just a lot of pressure. So I only take enough music work to pay for the gear I purchase (plus taxes). If I wanted music composition and production to replace my day job, my tolerance for other people's music would have to expand and my ability to turn down work would essentially disappear.</span></span></div>

<div style="font-size: 14px; margin-bottom: 6px; margin-top: 6px;">
<span style="background-color: black;"><span style="color: white;"><b><br />2. What kind of liability cushion do you have?</b> Whether you do this part time or it's your career, freelance commission work has a certain amount of "danger" to it that a salaried position does not. Let's say someone commissions you to paint 5000 pts of Imperial Fists, which, for GMM or Dave Taylor, is not unheard of. So you take the 6 weeks to 3 months (and that is an ambitious estimate) to finish the models, which means that you did not really do any other commission work, and you mail them off only to find that they arrived destroyed. Or on the way to the post office, you get in a car accident. Or there was a home invasion. How are you going to make it right with your customer? Is the postal service insurance going to cover all the hours your took to paint AND the cost of the models AND the time you took getting through the red tape AND the cost of painting them again? How much is in your emergency fund? Do you HAVE an emergency fund? Do you have liability insurance? Have you factored the premium into your costs? Do you plan to be a sole proprietor?</span></span></div>
<table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center;"><tbody>

</tbody></table>
<div style="font-size: 14px; margin-bottom: 6px; margin-top: 6px;">
<span style="background-color: black;"><span style="color: white;"><b><br />3. Have you considered the sunk costs?</b> Have you amortized or prorated the cost of materials into your hourly rate? Are you going to weigh the deduction you can take for your home office? What about the hours you are going to work answering emails, shipping, networking, etc? Is all of that in your hourly rate as well?</span></span></div>
<div style="font-size: 14px; margin-bottom: 6px; margin-top: 6px;">
<span style="background-color: black;"><span style="color: white;"><b>4. What about opportunity cost? </b>This is probably the most important thing, and it's really what kills most of my entrepreneurial aspirations. What am I NOT doing while I am commission painting, and am I losing money as a result? <b>And opportunity cost is not just defined monetarily. </b>You have to ask yourself questions like: I'm going to need to paint 4 hours per night after work to get this commission done. Is the $xxxx.xx I'm going to make at the end worth the 2 ballet recitals, 4 date nights, and 30 family dinners I am going to miss? I am contracted as a user experience director at a large insurance company at the moment. There is no possible way I could support my family at the level to which they've grown accustomed and save money for retirement purely by doing side jobs and commissions. So you need to consider the sacrifices you will have to make both financially and emotionally.</span></span></div>
<table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center;"><tbody>

<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;"><span style="background-color: black;"><span style="color: white;">Tommie Soule</span></span><br />
<span style="background-color: black;"><span style="color: white;">http://www.golempaintingstudio.co.uk/</span></span></td></tr>
</tbody></table>
<div style="font-size: 14px; margin-bottom: 6px; margin-top: 6px;">
<span style="background-color: black;"><span style="color: white;"><b><br />5. Am I ready to take it seriously?</b> You may be able to start by word of mouth and a Wix website you did on your own, but that is not how a business is run. If you want to go beyond the Etsy-level of professionalism to get real and steady work, you need to take marketing seriously, and you need to bake it into your rate. A beautiful portfolio, a responsive social media presence, professional packaging...these are all time wasters but also really vital to success.</span></span></div>
<div style="font-size: 14px; margin-bottom: 6px; margin-top: 6px;">
<span style="background-color: black;"><span style="color: white;"><br /></span></span></div>
<div style="font-size: 14px; margin-bottom: 6px; margin-top: 6px;">
<span style="background-color: black;"><span style="color: white;">So once you factor in all these variables and also assess how much time it takes you to actually paint, you should have a good idea of how much you will need to charge to BREAK EVEN. And this will be a very honest number, but it will also seem astronomically high. Obviously, you need to stay competitive to get any work, but as many people find, it's too much to ask of oneself. Even if you decide to do it because money isn't the factor that drives you, it will be important to be aware of just how much you are profiting or losing. Otherwise, you are living in a fantasyland. Think about what happened to Blue Table.</span></span></div>
<div style="font-size: 14px; margin-bottom: 6px; margin-top: 6px;">
<span style="background-color: black;"><span style="color: white;">I think getting paid to paint miniatures is a noble profession, but know what you are getting into. Many people who play 40k and paint really well do not have the social skills to successfully run a customer-driven service enterprise. Be self-aware and brutally honest. It's the least you can do for yourself and your potential customers. </span></span></div>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjV6wPQjN_nN4ALlMmQQstZGRmgkSxSBKkRlazIjd7OT4FVb3AQPVKNKsanW_ic432x-Crd-mHxoRUH5TXSRcJ0bRpjC-O66AbO6Dmvtqp5436Iw-E-98AS1p79txuj0Vd-45pDx-ftA6M/s1600/crossroads.png" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="810" data-original-width="1444" height="179" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjV6wPQjN_nN4ALlMmQQstZGRmgkSxSBKkRlazIjd7OT4FVb3AQPVKNKsanW_ic432x-Crd-mHxoRUH5TXSRcJ0bRpjC-O66AbO6Dmvtqp5436Iw-E-98AS1p79txuj0Vd-45pDx-ftA6M/s320/crossroads.png" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
<br />
So I'm at a real quandary here. and despite blogging this, I doubt anyone will really read this, and I don't blame anyone for that; this is probably a little too personal. But I have a feeling that many of you have gone through this very thing.<br />
<a name='more'></a>In this "State of the Union", I am going to reveal some things about me that will make it easy for people to doxx me, and I'm going to rely on the sheer unremarkable nature of this blog to protect me from that. I am just a guy who lives in the Chicago area. I'm a dad of two teens who are NOT into nerdy pursuits (nor is my wife), but that's just fine. I work in the field of user experience design for a major insurance company, and I've been in this field for a long time. I'm also a musician and "composer".<br />
<br />
I'm at a real crossroads here at the first quarter of 2019. I have an alarming wall of shame. Right now, as I write this, I'm looking at unopened boxes of Necromunda, Kill Team, Deathwatch Overkill and two Dark Imperiums sitting on the floor. They are on the floor because my shelf of shame is completely full of 40k sprues. And this is not even taking into account my pile of Warmachine and Hordes stuff along with about a dozen other game systems. I've pretty much stopped buying models, but that doesn't make things any better.<br />
<br />
But I'm thinking that I'm not really that different than many of you out there. I've seen many walls of shame on social media and a lot of grey models on the tabletop. My two closest FLGSes have shuttered for good. Writing music and intermittent games of Texas Hold'em compete with 40k and my family, of course, for my non-working time. I am also overweight, and at my age, that needs to be addressed. There are old dudes, and there are fat dudes, but rarely are there old fat dudes.<br />
<br />
So, as the title says, what now? I've pretty much let this blog die...it was all over the place, and although some of my posts still generate decent traffic, I have not given it the love it deserves. I've already mentioned my lack of forward push in terms of painting. And my recording studio is seeing a lot of me noodling but no serious playing. Oh, and I just checked again, still overweight.<br />
<br />
I know that NewYears is the worst time for general life changes, but I just have to get going. So I started a very mild diet on Jan 1. I also took three days and cleaned up my painting workstation, and I'm in a spreadsheet to plan out my painting. I think I am going to try keeping a schedule to field 4-5 different Kill Teams...I mean, I have the models. I’ve already gotten a start on this, and because it’s not overwhelming, I’ve made some progress.<br />
<br />
I'm also going to revamp the look of the blog...it's very dated. Stay tuned.<br />
<br />
Do you have any resolutions for 2019? How are they going so far?<br />

<br />
This is the second in an intermittent series of fiction that I have written.<br />
<br />
A few years back, prior to any Mechanicus models or codices were released, a friend of mine Lantz created a homebrew Mechanicus codex and a set of converted models. It was quite striking, and the points and abilities were well thought out. Very shortly afterwards,<br />

there was an announcement regarding the official release of the Mechanicus and Skitarii codices. Lantz very graciously sunsetted his rules. I had written two pieces of fluff for that book. He wanted to portray brief conflicts between the Mechanicus and various factions. I was lucky enough to get Chaos and Tyranids.<br />
<br />
What follows is my one page story about an young enginseer on an expedition.<br />
<span style="color: #6aa84f;"><br /><br />The landing craft bucked and dipped as it hit the outermost reaches of the planet’s atmosphere. This was the only part of these recovery efforts that Enginseer Zyra found uncomfortable. She was not so augmented that she did not feel it “beneath” her to have to endure reentry riding in the cargo bay with the salvage vehicles and bivouac pods. The tech adepts were somewhere much deeper in the massive converted freight loader, each one sequestered in small monastic quarters and silently communing with the Omnissaiah amidst the strong vapors of incense, ozone and fuel oil. She, however, was relegated to the bay, nursing and watching over the massive augers and monstrous shovels that would labor to recover both the artifacts and the enormous investment of this venture. <br /><br />Of course, there were other monsters on board. Zyra had seen Astartes before, but only from afar – once, as a child, she attended a victory parade after the Blood Ravens had ousted the scouting leg of an Eldar raiding party on one of her homeworld’s hundreds of nameless moons. Not long after, she had entered the Mechanicum as a novitiate and learned about their genetic implants and unassailable character, but at the time, looking up at row after row of impossibly tall, scarlet armor, they were terrifying.<br /><br />They were no less impressive now. There were only six of them suiting up in their segregated quarters adjacent to the loading bay, but they seem to fill up every inch of the space, crowding out even sound and light. She was curious as to why each of the six had the same black and silver armor but each of their right shoulders bore a different insignia. She recognized the inverse Omega of the Ultramarines and the black on yellow hand of the Imperial Fists, but she had never seen or even heard of the icons on the other four. But she very clearly recognized the symbol on the other epaulet, and it brought a chill to her unaugmented spine. She knew the cold lines that made up the Inquisitorial signet, and it was significant enough to her to discourage further internal inquiry. Whatever the orders that these “Inquisition Marines” were following, Zyra knew that they involved no compassion or mercy.<br /><br />Within seconds of the bone-jarring landing, the massive loading doors opened with a hiss onto a dusty grey moonscape. The distant horizon was crowned by massive storm clouds and dozens of tornadoes. As the machines lumbered out of the lander, the Astartes pushed past Zyra and disappeared, running at a startling pace, into the dust. She climbed the ladder to the cockpit on top of the largest auger as it rumbled by. The automated discovery beacon that brought them here was close, but the slow pace of the machines would find them at their destination in 4 hours. The vibrations from the engines quickly sent Zyra into a trance-like reverie.<br /><br />The proximity alarm brought her back to alertness as the auger ground to a halt. There was a large crater in their path that was not on their survey data. She was about to cross reference this anomaly and alert the tech adepts when she saw the glint of onyx peppering the uniform grey of the landscape. She grabbed an auspex and climbed down off of the vehicle. The dust in the air prevented the auspex from analyzing the deposits. She slid down, with some effort, the side of the steep wall of the crater, noting the warmth of the surface. As she approached the first black shape, her breath caught as she realized what it was. Her auspex, immediately forgotten, began immediately reporting the composition of materials: plasteel, ceramite, metal, hydraulic fluid, and biological – bone, muscle, skin, blood. She stared at the severed arm, still gripping a chainsword, and in her panic, she noted that the shoulder insignia, a yellow teardrop on a red field, was one she didn’t recognize. Her augmetic eye quickly assessed that all six marines were here, albeit in many pieces. She was standing, she realized, in a blast crater. What could have-<br /><br />The auger exploded in a shower of light and the reek of promethium, flaming debris raining down around Zyra. But she couldn’t flinch or turn to see the slagged auger; she had spotted the attacker. The unmistakable square nose of a warhound titan peered over the far edge of the crater, crouched like a feral beast. It’s plasma cannon was still glowing and the Vulcan megabolter’s chambers were skittishly spinning and clicking, its machine spirit itching to fight. But something was not right about this titan’s profile. The hard angles and straight lines of its profile were softened by some sort of biological attachments, and there were not indicators of Legio affiliation.<br /><br />The scrapcode that filled her head drove Zyra to her knees and illuminated her confusion. She realized why the forward expedition team stopped transmitting after activating the beacon. She understood why the tech adepts were so excited. They thought that there was an STC pattern within the ancient “wreckage”. The second burst of scrapcode knocked her prone, blood from her nose and ears staining the gray dust.<br /><br />As the silhouettes of two other defiled warhounds came into view, she could hear the whine of the plasma cannon, now pointed at her, initiating its warm up sequence. Zyra sent a noospheric communication back to the landing craft a millisecond before being obliterated in the terrible white light of plasma.</span><br />

<br />
A few years back, prior to any Mechanicus models or codices were released, a friend of mine Lantz created a homebrew Mechanicus codex and a set of converted models. It was quite striking, and the points and abilities were well thought out. Very shortly afterwards,<br />
<a name='more'></a>there was an announcement regarding the official release of the Mechanicus and Skitarii codices. Lantz very graciously sunsetted his rules. I had written two pieces of fluff for that book. He wanted to portray brief conflicts between the Mechanicus and various factions. I was lucky enough to get Chaos and Tyranids.<br />
<br />
What follows is my one page story about a tech-adept with just a few minutes left to live. The other story will go up later in the week.<br />
<span style="color: #6aa84f;"><br /></span>

<div style="text-align: center;">

<span style="color: #6aa84f; font-size: large;"><br /></span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<span style="line-height: 115%;"><span style="color: #6aa84f; font-size: large;">Adept
Chronon knew that it was just a matter of time. <br /><br /><o:p></o:p></span></span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<span style="line-height: 115%;"><span style="color: #6aa84f; font-size: large;">He could see
the trail of blood and viscera that led away from the gaping hole in his chest
to what was left of his organic heart, now lying in a black-red puddle under
his secondary cogitator in the corner of the lab. He realized that even before
his augmetic respiration and circulation mechanisms failed, his mechadendrites
and power arm would lose power and release the slathering, chomping creature
that they held in a crushing grip. He had managed to close the blast door before
the uncountable number of these swarming, relatively small xenos infiltrated
his lab, but he still had to kill 6 of these relentless monsters one at a time,
losing his organic arm, one foot, and the aforementioned heart in the process.
Under normal circumstances, he would have dispatched them easily, but this was
the fourth day since the equatorial photovoltaic collectors went offline,
choked by falling spores; Chronon, and he presumed the rest of the planet, was
surviving on dangerously low power reserves. He was sprawled on the floor with
the creature held above him like a horrible infant. He slowly lowered his head
back onto the cold marble. He calculated the power savings of not taxing his
neck and clavicle servos.<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span>With no other
variables, resting his head would allow him to maintain his grip for an
additional 10 minutes.<br /><br /><o:p></o:p></span></span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<span style="line-height: 115%;"><span style="color: #6aa84f; font-size: large;">Chronon knew

<div class="MsoNormal">
<span style="line-height: 115%;"><span style="color: #6aa84f; font-size: large;">He closed
his eyes and let part of himself drift into the Noosphere. He tried to make
sense of all that had happened since the beginning of this invasion – no,
invasion was inaccurate; it was a harvest. It had begun with orbit-bound
astropaths reporting a wall of nothing impeding their communications. <span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span>A few weeks later, a raft of small meteors
came hurling from the shadow in the warp, followed by capital ship-sized abominations
of tendrils and flesh. As the meteors impacted the surface of the planet, they
vomited forth the stuff of madness. Some teemed with leaping, man-sized
creatures with scything claws dripping with toxins. Others released huge,
lumbering hulks that launched two-part organic munitions. Yesterday, Chronon
observed two of these living superheavy tanks take down a Warlord Titan. The
firestorm caused by the sentient projectiles was caustic and incendiary enough
to melt the titan up to the torso. Worst of all, though, were the psychic
beings. Sickly, vestigial bodies hung like butchered meat from huge levitating
crested heads, and the Skitarii that ventured too close to them instantly died,
their brains boiled in their skulls. Chronon marveled at the sheer variety and
adaptability of these invaders. He went deeper into the Noosphere, trying to
cross-reference the terrible images in his mind with any mechanicum-indexed
information. He found what he was looking for in the archives of the Magos Biologis
of the Tyran System. These same creatures had completely scoured Tyran Primus
of organic material, leaving a dead rock in its wake. His link was failing, but
he managed to ingest all of the information from the Magos along with
supplemental material from both the Adeptes Astartes and the Inquisition itself.
The terms swept by in a wash of binary code – Hive Fleet, Carnifex, Hive
Tyrant, Venomthrope…the taxonomy that Terra and Mars had applied was strangely
evocative of the nightmares of his barely remembered youth. These
“Tyranids” had either spanned the Segmentum in an unbelievably short time, or
the tendrils of their fleet were incomprehensibly vast. As his mechadendrites
began to shut down, the creature (“rippers”, they had been labeled) began to
thrash more wildly, anticipating a feeding. Chronon would have liked to have
studied this galaxy-spanning, all-consuming race. Had they left a swath of dead
worlds for eons, or did they travel in a dormant state? He uploaded his entire
memory stream blindly into the Noosphere as his power arm began to whine. The
Empire of Man would eventually meet the bulk of this unstoppable foe.<o:p></o:p></span></span></div>

TL;DR posts are simple rants. Please ignore this if you are not into hearing my anger. Honestly, why WOULD you? But this post is an extension of one I made in May.<br />
<div>
<br />
<table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center;"><tbody>
<tr><td><img border="0" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjj28mdf1Vi4XdWCyl5NMl8kV9d1UbNif_G__S70gD1_NNMxTLMB6hnRIjv0OsJ6j4JuBedmaporPod77huL9CufSPKRNwc20nmhxOsnz_sHAP6pdPuUtnzopCdnaUmSuNgB_g4xAENK20/s400/FacePalmMarine.jpg" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;" width="400" /></td></tr>
<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="font-size: 12.8px;">Happy thoughts....happy thoughts.....</td></tr>
</tbody></table>
I haven't had such mixed feelings about something since Keurig cups made my love of convenience clash with my love for the environment. This could be even more whiny (or whingey) than my normal ranting, so you've been warned.<br />
<a name='more'></a><br />
I'm an old guy. I hit a half-century this year, and I'm not too happy about it. I'm coming to terms with the fact that I will never be a famous rock star, I'm never going to figure out how to code, and I'm never going to even be in the running for a Golden Demon or win a tourney. But that's all OK. I still have a nice recording studio, I can't code, but as a UX professional, I can get stuff I want to launch coded by much more capable people, and even though my "two thin coats" and my really poorly performing (but fluffy) lists, I really enjoy the whole "thing" around 40k.<br />
<br />
But one thing makes me nuts about this game. I am a rules completist, which means that 40k is insanely frustrating 100% of the time. It's not even the money, although that's pretty bad. Last edition, I didn't even come close to getting all the codexes, and it still cost me over $800.00. How much is someone supposed to spend to get all the rules to a game? I don't think it's unreasonable to want a comprehensive set.<br />
<br />
So the announcement of this edition was exciting. The core rules are 12 pages! And there are just a few indexes for all model stats! Holy crap! This is what I was waiting for. So I lapped up all of them like a dog laps up antifreeze. And just like that proverbial dog, I seized up yesterday when GW announced that they were releasing <a href="https://www.warhammer-community.com/2017/07/05/your-codex-is-coming-july-5gw-homepage-post-1/" target="_blank">TEN CODEXES BY DECEMBER</a>. I mean, seriously. They are going to be hardback, which means they will be at LEAST $50.00 retail. I think there are another 15 coming as well. The first one will probably be enormous, meaning that I wouldn't rule out a $75.00 or even $100.00 codex.<br />
<br />
But let's say they are $40.00 each from a discount retailer. That's still a grand to get all the codexes. I thought maybe GW had broken their habits, but now I fully expect that by the time codex 19 comes out, they will revise codex #1. The vicious cycle continues.<br />
<br />
I wouldn't even mind buying electronic versions of all of it if they would commit to updating the stats, inserting errata, etc. I would also support a subscription service to keep rules changes afloat, but that is also unlikely to happen.<br />
<br />
As I said, I'm old. I can afford (barely) to be a completist, but I'd certainly rather buy overpriced models than overpriced hardcover books that become useless in a year or two.<br />
<br />
Come on, GW, I'm sure the codexes are a cash cow...I get it. But your business model has proven that we will buy just about anything you put out at any price you set. Can't you show a little mercy with the rules and stats? The more I look at my Jenga tower of outdated codexes from 5th edition on, the more I'm inclined to just say "it's been a good run" and put it away for good. This is not said out of anger, but out of sadness. I'm not a fanboy OR a hater. I just want to be happy with this game and with Games Workshop.</div>

So I went to <a href="http://www.c2e2.com/" target="_blank">C2E2</a> a few weeks ago. If your only exposure to cons are 40k heavy, please do yourself a favor and attend one of these pop culture/comic conventions. They are ever so slightly less geeky, although the winner of the cosplay contest was a female 40k inquisitor!<br />
<br />
<table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center;"><tbody>
<tr><td style="text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgg7_zI2DQtcIa7WFuWe9fjVIj5rY_r0d0EjQxjEysQQCwqQBpcIPZ7Vwky2JP09goQaIepeDN7dQOvksfHlz3IQYtPC7Or3UFVg1fS6FYrDctxCHi960C6lU1OfdfXwDsxLZzOQD2NI_A/s1600/Okkido-Cosplay.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><img border="0" height="400" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgg7_zI2DQtcIa7WFuWe9fjVIj5rY_r0d0EjQxjEysQQCwqQBpcIPZ7Vwky2JP09goQaIepeDN7dQOvksfHlz3IQYtPC7Or3UFVg1fS6FYrDctxCHi960C6lU1OfdfXwDsxLZzOQD2NI_A/s400/Okkido-Cosplay.jpg" width="263" /></a></td></tr>
<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">The plasma gun was pretty amazing.</td></tr>
</tbody></table>
<div style="text-align: left;">
So while walking through Artists Alley where commissions were incredibly cheap (but no one I spoke with had really done 40k art), I noticed that there were a few hobby vendors an aisle over amidst the booths full of vintage toys and fidget spinners. Most of those hobby booths were Gundam-focused, of <br />
<a name='more'></a>course. I wish I knew more about the genre because those models are amazing. I mean the Tau aesthetic obviously started with anime and gundam, but they've deviated quite a bit despite surface similarities.<br />
<br />
I was on the hunt for a very specific chrome paint in one of these gundam booths when I ran across this:</div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiHDtRBQbNIqGDKEZv7Meqzbr1ueekCyZbH-dVl_U9K-d4H94ZdM1HL8tz8osyEr9LAhiWpc1V8WdML2mZa3WPDG9yaKgl06bJm8atNzaLWtfwxbAcK5mvmj-XLoTeJhpO7QU2XsRPunnk/s1600/Screen+Shot+2017-05-11+at+11.23.37+AM.png" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="382" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiHDtRBQbNIqGDKEZv7Meqzbr1ueekCyZbH-dVl_U9K-d4H94ZdM1HL8tz8osyEr9LAhiWpc1V8WdML2mZa3WPDG9yaKgl06bJm8atNzaLWtfwxbAcK5mvmj-XLoTeJhpO7QU2XsRPunnk/s400/Screen+Shot+2017-05-11+at+11.23.37+AM.png" width="400" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
I immediately thought of this in my mind:</div>
<table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center;"><tbody>
<tr><td style="text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh5g7_w4vmWujb7-gti1EXBugtgVeIYT-rOHj4p-FbcezglRcIy2uFbpCBRgMVPBaLP88sy8MgBETDOeOvrRSJWKL1BhGvWS4O7zr2kpfPbtpFLClxNTH-0Si0CmXB3H4nzDBdXZ_knlNk/s1600/Impalings-of-Vlad-the-Impaler-1.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><img border="0" height="200" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh5g7_w4vmWujb7-gti1EXBugtgVeIYT-rOHj4p-FbcezglRcIy2uFbpCBRgMVPBaLP88sy8MgBETDOeOvrRSJWKL1BhGvWS4O7zr2kpfPbtpFLClxNTH-0Si0CmXB3H4nzDBdXZ_knlNk/s400/Impalings-of-Vlad-the-Impaler-1.jpg" width="400" /></a></td></tr>
<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">Vlad had the right idea. To handle parts, I mean!</td></tr>
</tbody></table>
<div style="text-align: left;">
So what is it? Well, it says right on the side. It's a Mr. Nekonote Station. o_O<br />
I'm guessing that there is some stupidly obvious (at least to someone Japanese) reason for the name, but I couldn't begin to tell you what that might be. What I do know is that what you see here is a bunch of corrugated cardboard strips in a card stock box, and a bunch of tapered dowels with clips on the end. I also found a large set of those dowels.</div>
<table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center;"><tbody>
<tr><td style="text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhNMD_0LoIasd_E7_JU3Ustua_iqabiJAHzWQdG44wt1x_JSizczqfQpWV16dR4D4ezptZeFd1xzOuZXm33DPEWu1hdjVZuYYF0AiEVU65HSmqrsEOoBLNAq6cSg-wQ-BahPpz320Tl_dU/s1600/IMG_3845.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><img border="0" height="400" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhNMD_0LoIasd_E7_JU3Ustua_iqabiJAHzWQdG44wt1x_JSizczqfQpWV16dR4D4ezptZeFd1xzOuZXm33DPEWu1hdjVZuYYF0AiEVU65HSmqrsEOoBLNAq6cSg-wQ-BahPpz320Tl_dU/s400/IMG_3845.jpg" width="300" /></a></td></tr>
<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">No, YOU rotate it 90 degrees. >:(</td></tr>
</tbody></table>
The concept is simple: clip small items to the dowel and slide the dowel into any available spot. There is little to no friction so this should last quite a while.</div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<br /></div>

<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
One point of caution. The little clips are pretty gentle, but they definitely could bite into resin. As you can see in the diagram above they are clipping to the sprue or non-visible area. I'm going to have to see if I can find another attachment system or gentler clips for really tiny pieces.</div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
So the real question is: Is this worth buying? I know some of you are thinking that you could just buy all these separate items and create this yourself, and I agree with you. But for $6.50 US for the base, it would be hard for me to justify fashioning one out of corrugated boxes, a box cutter, card stock, and tape. Apart from the overly strong clips, I have no complaints about the price quality or function of this station.</div>
<div style="text-align: left;">

<div style="text-align: left;">
Now I need to find out more about this Mr. Nekonote...</div>

<h3>
<span style="color: red;">WARNING: THERE IS A BIG BUT AT THE END OF THIS VERY LONG POST</span></h3>
Hello, Hive Zero fans (as if there are any)! I'm back from yet another hiatus caused by work and quickly growing teenage girls who need rides to every activity known to (wo)man. Telling a varsity tennis player that her practices are cutting into painting and gaming time is met with a strong reaction in the Hive Zero household. But I have a moment, sooo...<br />
<br />
Let's talk about all of the craziness happening right now with Games Workshop. And by craziness, I mean 180-degree-change-from-previous-behavior insanity. I know I will be leaving out<br />
<a name='more'></a>a bunch of stuff, and some of this may not be chronologically accurate, but that's OK; This is my perception of what is going on and how it affects me.<br />
<br />
First, the new CEO has had about 18 months to really flex his muscles. In that time, he has done some pretty impressive stuff. During his reign:<br />
<br />
<ul>
<li>GW created Starter Sets for both 40k and AoS that are usable AND a nominal savings.</li>
<li>They've released some amazing new armies and models: Custodes, Deathwatch, Primarchs, Mechanicus, GSC, etc</li>
<li>Rules are coming out faster than I can afford them.</li>
<li>Specialist Games are back from the dead, and their offerings are fairly strong!</li>
<li>Shares have almost doubled in value.</li>
<li>Age of Sigmar is starting to be considered a decent game, meaning that even people outside of the apologist/fanatic inner circle are getting into it without too much gnashing of teeth.</li>
</ul>
<div>
And then of course is the mega-amazing news. 8th Edition is coming, and it is coming soon! It has been a very structured rollout of information, and that's really been the most surprising thing. Their blog has slowly and systematically revealed the changes to each important facet of the rules. This is a sea change of epic proportions.</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
To truly understand the magnitude of the change in marketing methodology, you don't need to go back too far. I started this blog in 2009. I had just returned to 40k after abandoning it in the mid nineties. Even then, I was not a huge enthusiast, but there was Inquisitor, Necromunda, Epic, Space Hulk, and good old 40k. The box art was the weirdly photorealistic heads with misproportioned toy bodies...all the Blanche goodness was <i>inside</i> the rulebooks. I came back to a scene that was very different. BoLS, B&C, DakkaDakka and others were quite active but fairly amateur due to poor content management systems. They did, however, give a good scope of the popularity of the hobby. But back then, Dark Eldar were stagnant, you could expect a single codex release every 6-9 months or so, and 5th Edition was in full force at tournaments. There were waves of netlists, and it was advent of deathstars, leafblowers, gunlines, and the death of my favorite, nidzilla.<br /><br />Fast forward to today. We have a company that seems to understand that their revenue and livelihood depend on new customers. While attracting those new customers, they realize that they must also keep the existing user base happy OR off-balance. So for people considering the hobby, they have boardgames, video game licenses (including casual apps), repackaged items for mass market retailers (although I don't think that went well...any numbers on Vedros?), and simplified rulesets. For the die hards, they have a FLOOD of new armies, rules, 30k, models, and books. They've also pushed the storyline forward in a big lurch to cause some excitement. GW has also seriously turned around their social media strategy, and from the point of view of someone who does this for a living, I would say that they've succeeded, at least so far. Why would I say that? Let me present Exhibit D:<br /><table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center;"><tbody>
<tr><td style="text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi2Ex0-SZNuUzdfzgXHXQscIA2uNKTfZNoiwesFMwCLCXC8kEykCp09_pwDvFMZNRbN7FOhliVErvcpi1-V-U6NcsHPc8jzKfde4VmOI0_2rAPcja5Q5I6rZhSBBNwS6UcWj3aNcHr5DQs/s1600/dLovf3mw.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi2Ex0-SZNuUzdfzgXHXQscIA2uNKTfZNoiwesFMwCLCXC8kEykCp09_pwDvFMZNRbN7FOhliVErvcpi1-V-U6NcsHPc8jzKfde4VmOI0_2rAPcja5Q5I6rZhSBBNwS6UcWj3aNcHr5DQs/s320/dLovf3mw.jpg" width="320" /></a></td></tr>
<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">In the grim darkness of social media in 2017, GW has finally birthed a meme-worthy star.</td></tr>
</tbody></table>
</div>
In case you are not a YouTube enthusiast, this is Duncan Rhodes, in-house painter extraordinaire for Games Workshop. He's got some serious painting chops, but more importantly, he has become Games Workshop's first bonafide Internet sensation. His "two thin coats" mantra has become an actual meme, and unlike previous similar incidents, GW did the right thing: they just let it organically grow. It didn't get out of hand, nor did it reflect poorly on the company. Again, success.<br />
<br />
Other outreach attempts have been productive as well. The latest FAQ for 7th edition was driven by questions submitted to GW's Facebook page. They are really adding content to their blog on a regular basis. Their pre-show closed door sessions at Adepticon were talked about quite a bit, and everything is looking optimistic.<br />
<h2>
<span style="color: red;"><b>BUT...</b></span></h2>
I told you there would be a big but at the end of this. I'm not a real doom and gloom guy. If you read some of my other posts, you'll realize that I'm not a troll or a whiner. I've expressed a few puzzled concerns here and there, and I do truly lament cheating in this hobby, but I'm neither a GW basher nor an apologist.<br />
<br />
So here's my concern. As soon as they announced 8th Edition, there was a tidal wave of "My codex that I just bought is worthless now!". When GW announced a contingency for people who bought them recently, there was a slew of "that's not enough". As these rules reveals appear on the GW Community site, I keep seeing comments like "That's so dumb" and "40k Sigmar sucks".<br />
<br />
Really?<br />
<br />
To be fair, there are a good number of reasonable comments, both positive and and negative, on Facebook and even the big hobby sites. But I just thought that this one time, when GW is actually being very careful about what they are doing, some of these common trolls would give them a break <i>if only to not look like a fool later on. </i>But even as I type this, I realize that that is a pipe dream.<br />
<br />
A this point in GW's new marketing trajectory, my only complaint is their astronomical prices. Not because I think they are overpriced (I'm a firm believer of "things are worth what people are willing to pay for them"), but because I think that at this time, sales could skyrocket if they had some loss leaders.<br />
<br />
I haven't felt this good about 40k in a while. I've stopped reading the big sites because of the negativity, and maybe that contributes to it, but it is my sincere hope that even the loudest complainers will get a game that they will at least begrudgingly enjoy playing.<br />

<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">Roald Dahl! I've never even heard of this.</td></tr>
</tbody></table>
25-28mm scale is a funny thing, especially 28mm Heroic. It totally makes sense in terms of being compact enough for gaming but large enough to have some detail in the miniatures. But still, it becomes problematic when trying to adapt materials and models from other manufacturers that were not intended for gaming let alone this scale.<br />
<a name='more'></a>25-28mm is equal to roughly 1/56. To use tank, plane or car model kits as modified vehicles that retain their general original shapes, it's best to use 1/48 scale models <i>in most cases </i>(sometimes, it just doesn't look right). Because of the "heroic" part of GW's aesthetic and their slightly smaller scale utilized for their own vehicles, you can loot just about any 1/48 tank, helicopter or plane for Orkish purposes, but cars are a bit more finicky (and many cars are only available in 1/25 scale or larger).<br />
<br />
So a few months ago, I was in a Goodwill store (<a href="http://www.huffingtonpost.com/john-hrabe/the-worst-corporation-in-_b_1876905.html" target="_blank">resale shop...but don't fool yourself into thinking it's some sort of charity</a>). I've never had much luck finding anything or use in these places, but that day, I saw this on the shelf:<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEimdgfi8xQaDBwcfMl6u4SXUhW2w5ErFgv816e_u5OFYlo3zQiXJtFMTijOlma22oRHaexFbXepAOOWPJ7Ue9gFrYubzhCCSvnDqeQpS4KPUSNeHRL0rXbe5v-g9t-h5sHmaEMDUyVD9RU/s1600/IMG_3023.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="300" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEimdgfi8xQaDBwcfMl6u4SXUhW2w5ErFgv816e_u5OFYlo3zQiXJtFMTijOlma22oRHaexFbXepAOOWPJ7Ue9gFrYubzhCCSvnDqeQpS4KPUSNeHRL0rXbe5v-g9t-h5sHmaEMDUyVD9RU/s400/IMG_3023.jpg" width="400" /></a></div>
<br />
I built a ton of WWII plane models of varying build difficulty in my youth, but this was just about the simplest model I had ever seen. It had about 15 pieces including the canopy and propeller. I thought it would be a good conversion platform, but alas, it was 1/72 scale. Still, all the sprues were complete, and it was priced at $1.00, so I bought it, thinking halfheartedly that I would give it to one of my kids.<br />
<br />
But then I remembered these:<br />
<br />
<table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center;"><tbody>
<tr><td style="text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiR_ZJ8Wcybx_ldwprXEAif6hNeNAU72kl3uCrUz0GQr-JbJRvIZMRwU-NFjHficQteOChnFzwhKPMMw-ZAptA1mCxh7XtjzhKSCaNFZL9oQ238BUh8mBIpwKG5AR-967q_FTdigAIHN58/s1600/99590103088_GrotTanks01.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><img border="0" height="400" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiR_ZJ8Wcybx_ldwprXEAif6hNeNAU72kl3uCrUz0GQr-JbJRvIZMRwU-NFjHficQteOChnFzwhKPMMw-ZAptA1mCxh7XtjzhKSCaNFZL9oQ238BUh8mBIpwKG5AR-967q_FTdigAIHN58/s400/99590103088_GrotTanks01.jpg" width="386" /></a></td></tr>
<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">©2017 Games Workshop</td></tr>

Grots! The comic relief of the comic relief of the 40k universe. This plane would be perfect for a grot flier. So I grabbed two grots out of a batch I got from an auction, two missile pods from a Land Speeder and a sheet and a few specialty shapes of plasticard, and I put this together:<br />

So today we have a nifty little kit from <a href="http://eccentricminiatures.com/accessories.html" rel="" target="_blank">Eccentric Miniatures</a>. Or, more specifically, </div>
<a name='more'></a>two kits, Type A and Type B. We'll get to that in a moment.<br />
<div style="text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
With the changeover from 25mm to 32mm bases for GW's standard Space Marines, many gamers were posed with a dilemma: stick all of your Space Marines in the freezer and snap the mini from the base (only if super glued...if you used polystyrene, you will snap off the feet) and then rebase, or try to figure out how to make the base a bit larger? If you are going for the latter solution, these adaptor rings from Eccentric are just the ticket.</div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center;"><tbody>
<tr><td style="text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjjJD150GpCZgB3sBchOsCyPFn8aCvXAOB-RsholbzQUKolPv1Ci5RsbTcyOcTZKFZwfNIL8gGhAgHX1JWV3pprAUbzzTVvofPTFNOB6KIW7QM2g0LqdndQztFp8HiycUzqQOmmq_N0Mmg/s1600/IMG_3444.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><img border="0" height="300" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjjJD150GpCZgB3sBchOsCyPFn8aCvXAOB-RsholbzQUKolPv1Ci5RsbTcyOcTZKFZwfNIL8gGhAgHX1JWV3pprAUbzzTVvofPTFNOB6KIW7QM2g0LqdndQztFp8HiycUzqQOmmq_N0Mmg/s400/IMG_3444.jpg" width="400" /></a></td></tr>
<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">My usual stellar lighting and photography.</td></tr>
</tbody></table>
<div style="text-align: left;">
Each package comes with 12 rings that fit around 25 mm beveled bases. <a href="http://eccentricminiatures.com/retems0017.html" rel="" target="_blank">Type A</a> and <a href="http://eccentricminiatures.com/retems0018.html" target="_blank">Type B</a> are identical except for the interior slant angle since different base manufacturers designed them differently. Kudos to eccentric for actually caring enough to figure it out. Type A fits Games Workshop, Forge Craft, Micro Arts, and HiTech. Type B is meant for Warlord, Scibor Miniatures, Secret Weapon, and Titan Forge. You'd have to experiment with other manufacturers' bases, but I will say that Type A fits Dragon Forge bases perfectly.</div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
So how do they work? Simple as pie.</div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center;"><tbody>
<tr><td style="text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjqnUCWNuhoRii0NPO6Qcv6U2gl3Ioz8OwvD6UtUmXrmbTb1aNjcIatUVHkfNGS7Qy1wnva168C8pAps499_xY4y7ZStv_JYDlQnlRSSa2RCqmw6NOPyHtVSjGFSH95p7dTQRGz96a10jk/s1600/IMG_3442.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><img border="0" height="300" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjqnUCWNuhoRii0NPO6Qcv6U2gl3Ioz8OwvD6UtUmXrmbTb1aNjcIatUVHkfNGS7Qy1wnva168C8pAps499_xY4y7ZStv_JYDlQnlRSSa2RCqmw6NOPyHtVSjGFSH95p7dTQRGz96a10jk/s400/IMG_3442.jpg" width="400" /></a></td></tr>
<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">Click to enlarge, although why would you?</td></tr>
</tbody></table>
<div style="text-align: left;">
You just put glue (I highly recommend polystyrene for this job) along the sides of the base and on the little mitered angles of the rings and just push together and hold for a few seconds. The polystyrene melts the plastics together, making the join very strong. Make sure you insure that they are flat and flush before the glue sets.</div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
And that's it! At $3.00 per 12, it's a bargain in my book. Of course, there's a bit more work to be done in matching the existing basing material, etc, but to get an army tournament legal for 25 cents each is pretty efficient.</div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
Are there any other alternatives out there? I'd love to see them...post in the comments. Happy New Year!</div>

In the five years or so that I've actively returned to the miniatures wargaming hobby, I never thought I would see this day. Back when dinosaurs ruled the earth, my favorite flavor of 40k was Kill Team, a set of rules that GW's specialist games put out for squad-level skirmishes. With a tiny number of models per side, there was no need to play with unpainted figures (a personal pet peeve of mine). You can still find the old rules and fan-updated rulesets all over the Internet, and they've done an admirable job keeping the flame alive. <a href="http://heralds-of-ruin.blogspot.com/p/kill-team-rules.html" target="_blank">The Heralds of Ruin</a><br />
<a name='more'></a>are the most prominent group that have done their own version using the Kill Team skeleton. I won't comment on that rule set since this post is about this little bastard.<br />
<br />
<table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center;"><tbody>
<tr><td style="text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhDQ67TS4H_c_Zfo4aHH1hXaOt97W7d11ZMFhD4Oau5AXdfmw4z674kDijPM81TILG5ndIVRgmG3TUYsdyCDgiJGWbjC95-hb4We2LnDZ9ev1bJ3r5CUompn5BuXFL34UhsOemlXx7yDOQ/s1600/IMG_2978.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><img border="0" height="400" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhDQ67TS4H_c_Zfo4aHH1hXaOt97W7d11ZMFhD4Oau5AXdfmw4z674kDijPM81TILG5ndIVRgmG3TUYsdyCDgiJGWbjC95-hb4We2LnDZ9ev1bJ3r5CUompn5BuXFL34UhsOemlXx7yDOQ/s400/IMG_2978.jpg" width="300" /></a></td></tr>
<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">If you look carefully at the shrinkwrap, you can see a reflection of me taking the picture wearing nothing but a chiffon nightgown and a safari hat. Just kidding...I don't own a safari hat.</td></tr>
</tbody></table>
This is the new boxed version of Kill Team. It's a relatively small box, similar to their "Getting Started" books. Let's take a peek inside.<br />
<table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center;"><tbody>
<tr><td style="text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhVUSTyqTiNK9k97IY4j4t2rGfc2kFZiu-kQukt2OvQvRWEW50eZB6Z9aYpe9et3gEC2BsFusBIPXsbKhCcnVtN4e8PMXdH_2M88CH_s1K4HqhK1B1dGT0q30hsLCFeTwPvdu4vQv1gEfw/s1600/IMG_2979.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><img border="0" height="300" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhVUSTyqTiNK9k97IY4j4t2rGfc2kFZiu-kQukt2OvQvRWEW50eZB6Z9aYpe9et3gEC2BsFusBIPXsbKhCcnVtN4e8PMXdH_2M88CH_s1K4HqhK1B1dGT0q30hsLCFeTwPvdu4vQv1gEfw/s400/IMG_2979.jpg" width="400" /></a></td></tr>
<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">Click to embiggenate the image.</td></tr>
</tbody></table>
So in no particular order you have:<br />
<br />
<ul>
<li>The three sprues that make up the tactical space marines.</li>
<li>The three sprues that make up the Tau fire team.</li>
<li>Bases (of course)</li>
<li>Two assembly/painting guides</li>
<li>Kill Team booklet</li>
<li>40k Digest full rulebook</li>
</ul>
<div>
So let's back up for a second. Black Library has had an electronic version of the Kill Team rules for sale for a while, but the booklet in this box seems to be updated from the previous version, and they've <a href="http://www.blacklibrary.com/all-products/kill-team-2016.html" rel="nofollow" target="_blank">updated it on the Black Library site as well</a>. This whole package is interesting from the perspective of the intended audience. I think it's pretty genius. Because what you have is an offering from GW that makes sense for a lot of existing players.</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
In terms of value, this box retails for $65.00 US. The two squads you get, one <a href="https://www.games-workshop.com/en-US/Space-Marine-Tactical-Squad-2015" rel="nofollow" target="_blank">Space Marine</a> and the other <a href="https://www.games-workshop.com/en-US/Tau-Empire-Fire-Warriors" rel="nofollow" target="_blank">Tau</a>, retail for <a href="https://www.games-workshop.com/en-US/Space-Marine-Tactical-Squad-2015" rel="nofollow" target="_blank">$40.00</a> and <a href="https://www.games-workshop.com/en-US/Tau-Empire-Fire-Warriors" rel="nofollow" target="_blank">$50.00</a> respectively. Then you have the Kill Team booklet, which Black Library sells <a href="http://www.blacklibrary.com/all-products/kill-team-2016.html" rel="nofollow" target="_blank">electronically for $9.99</a>. So right off the bat, you have 100 bucks worth of stuff for 65, which is, within the context of Games Workshop pricing policy, a steal.</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
But add on top of that the innocuous looking digest rulebook. These are not available separately, most likely because GW knows that no one would buy the <a href="https://www.games-workshop.com/en-US/Warhammer-40-000-EN-A" rel="nofollow" target="_blank">BRB</a>. This has been the case since at least 5th edition if not further back. They are highly desired from all of the limited edition boxed sets, and they sell on Ebay for around $20.00.</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
So this box is, before normal discounting, half the price of the 4 elements purchased separately, which by any perspective is a good deal. I can't see much to criticize about this.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<div>
<br /></div>
So should you buy it?<br />
<br />
<b>Do you already have the squads you want to use in Kill Team and you already have 40k rules in a format you like?</b> Either buy the tablet version of the rules, or buy the booklet on ebay...it's inevitable that they will appear there shortly.<br />
<br />
<b>Do you have Tau and SM armies and want a mini 40k rulebook?</b> Yes, by all means, buy this box.<br />
<br />
<b>Are you unfamiliar with 40k and want to get started?</b> Well, the rules here are not dumbed down in any way for this release. With this box, you will be playing actual 40k with a small list of restrictions and modifications, but I can't help but think this is hardly ideal. <a href="https://www.games-workshop.com/en-US/Dark-Vengeance-EN" rel="nofollow" target="_blank">Dark Vengeance</a> or <a href="https://www.games-workshop.com/en-US/Vedros" rel="nofollow" target="_blank">the Vedros box</a> may be a better way to go (I love that GW has "walled off" the Vedros products from the rest of the site. It shows retail multichannel awareness). I could go on and on about getting started in this hobby...I'll save that for another post.<br />
<br />
<b>Are you on the fence about Kill Team?</b> Well, what the heck, it's only $65 or less, and you get double the value that y ou can Ebay in pieces if you don't like it.<br />
<br />
I, for one, am glad I got it. Stay tuned for more about this great variant to 40k. We'll get into the book next time.Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2100642048696971643.post-32932488984983006592016-07-19T00:48:00.001-05:002017-01-08T14:00:15.591-06:00Budgethammer: Cheap but great battle board<table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center;"><tbody>

<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
Don't get me wrong. I love GW's Realm of Battle boards and Forgeworld's add ons to that board. I also really like mats. But at $35.00 for a collapsible, flat, and durable surface, it's hard to turn down. I may just have to get the one additional set that's still left.</div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
I'll put up pictures shortly with full terrain and armies.</div>

Look at this amazingly painted miniature. Holy cow.The tattoo work is otherworldly considering the size of this figure. I have no idea how it was done, which is strange because<br />
<a name='more'></a>I just read the very <a href="http://www.bushido-thegame.com/articles/painting-tattoo" target="_blank">well-written tutorial on tattoos</a> by artist Alberto Gil. <div>
<br /></div>
<div>
<br /></div>
It's me, back from the dead! Two months without posting. Work, family, blah blah. Also, I went into shell shock after Adepticon.<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
And now, there's a new version of Warmahordes coming in a few weeks, I've started a Frostgrave warband, I got excited by and then completely disillusioned by Dicemasters, I bought, opened, and then put away <a name='more'></a>Infinity: Operation Ice Storm (the models look intimidatingly small and detailed). I'm feeling a little loose. I haven't painted in a month, but summer is coming, and with that brings a bit of flexibility in schedule.</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
But today's post isn't about that.</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
I was in a Dollar Store last week., and I happened to see these:</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center;"><tbody>
<tr><td style="text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh0ZD4phJMiXGCGejscKqCUT5uxXeb1GxHaHnqemqLQ7TQNM3tJmc-3nZSifVeJFaPMsqgT8AyDVRh8FYOLuDj6TDxaQhNJ6Z3K0ytNGLSJSdCNXp27i8NOD3xt3bUTMny3JznO1JmwaC4/s1600/IMG_2452.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><img border="0" height="300" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh0ZD4phJMiXGCGejscKqCUT5uxXeb1GxHaHnqemqLQ7TQNM3tJmc-3nZSifVeJFaPMsqgT8AyDVRh8FYOLuDj6TDxaQhNJ6Z3K0ytNGLSJSdCNXp27i8NOD3xt3bUTMny3JznO1JmwaC4/s400/IMG_2452.JPG" width="400" /></a></td></tr>
<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">This may be the worst picture of anything ever. Sorry.</td></tr>
</tbody></table>
<div>
This is a mat that is functionally similar to the fake grass mats that one put's into a reptile cage (but being from a dollar store, I wouldn't trust it around animals). The thing that really caught my eye were the dimensions. 16" x 24" means that if I placed them in a 3 x 3 grid, I'd have a 4' x 6" battle board. I laid them out like this:</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEht1ze61LU8lgtUuxyozoTk2PZWZ6ePkBSivHrgrckgaCLSU2xZfW4sB1UUXdjGwsYxQzSbI7RZiT9cpS75D-mN_ugTk6T2wOctTvc_S81s8neF7EgL6Z08rl7qttrPDHdIjMjppB-t6TQ/s1600/IMG_2451.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="300" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEht1ze61LU8lgtUuxyozoTk2PZWZ6ePkBSivHrgrckgaCLSU2xZfW4sB1UUXdjGwsYxQzSbI7RZiT9cpS75D-mN_ugTk6T2wOctTvc_S81s8neF7EgL6Z08rl7qttrPDHdIjMjppB-t6TQ/s400/IMG_2451.JPG" width="400" /></a></div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
Now, I guess you could just tape them together, and you would have a janky $9.00 battlemat. But I'm thinking of gluing each one to a 24" x 16" piece of wood. I don't mind the plain look of this grass; I have plenty of terrain to go on it, and this would just be for AoS and KoW. The boards would stack nicely. I'll post the results shortly.</div>

<br />
One of my favorite FLGSes is actually 1.5 hours from my house. <a href="http://games-plus.com/" target="_blank">Games Plus</a> is located in a quiet suburb of Chicago, and it's been around for close to 40 years. I went there when I was a high school freshman, when the shelves were lined with Avalon Hill, Steve Jackson, and Ral Partha. It still has the most diverse inventory of any game store I have visited in my life. Of course, there are the complete lines of GW, Corvus Belli, Wyrd, PP, Flames of War, FFG, etc. There's also all the older and obscure stuff like Microarmor, Star Fleet Battles, many flavors of historicals, and every RPG and board game I've heard of.<br />
<br />
Twice a year, they hold a three day auction. They've been doing it for decades. I had missed every one of them until this year. Sunday was the miniatures auction (RPGs and board games are on different days), and with my 11 year old daughter in tow, we waded into the fray.<br />
<a name='more'></a>We walked out of there 5 hours later with a trunk ("boot" for you over the pond) full of boxes and bags. The total was a bit more than I had anticipated, and I wasn't sure exactly what I had purchased. What follows is a breakdown of all the stuff I got. I'm hoping it will help others decide whether attending a game auction is worth it or not. One caveat: this is probably one of the best auctions for this type of thing, so your mileage may vary. This may be a bit boring for a lot of you...my apologies; I'll see you at my next post.<br />
<br />

Who couldn't use more rocks? As you can see by the Warmachine fig peeking out on the right, this is pretty significant in terms of LOS. I'm guessing I paid about half price for these. That's fine by me.<br />

Paint job is horrible. I have a decent amount of (non-competitive) Skorne, but they are definitely not a top-tier interest of mine, so I only buy bits and pieces when I see them. Great sculpt, and $5.00 is decent.</div>

Now, I DO have a sizable Necron force including of a full complement of warriors, a LOT of scarabs (remember when the conga line was legal for a minute?), and three croissants. I have all of the special characters, but they are all Finecast, so I've managed to break so many arms and staffs during assembly that I've given up on that for a while. I've always wanted half a dozen Monoliths just for a cool factor, but there was just no justifying it. It's a start!</div>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
So there were a few more random figures that I purchased, but I think you get the idea. It was the most fun I've had in a game store in recent memory, and it was fun to have one of my kids with me. So Adepticon is next week. I will not be competing in anything, but I'd love to meet you and photograph your army. Anyone who is interested, comment here, and I will get back to you!</div>

So a 6 weeks ago or so, <a href="http://hivezero.blogspot.com/2016/01/incredible-deal-alert.html" target="_blank">I posted what should have been the deal of the century</a>: 4 W&N brushes in modeler's sizes for under $20.00. While I was hardly the first to notice this deal, that post was widely shared on Facebook thanks to the incredibly generous blog networks of Faeit and House of Paincakes. But now, there's been a snag.<br />

<br />
So this is not uncommon on crazy Amazon deals. Either this was a mistake (unlikely) or the vendor couldn't come through with some batch order, or the vendor simply ran out of stock.<br />
<br />
What WAS uncommon is the amount of personal vitriol I got on Facebook because people found out about it through my post. I won't call those people out, but here are a few things to keep in mind:<br />
- No one lost any money.<br />
- I did not stand to make any money. I am not a registered affiliate, and if you looked at the URL I had linked to, you can see that it had no hooks to make a commission.<br />
- I thought gamers should be the first to take advantage of this deal. It seemed, by the sizes alone, to be aimed towards miniature painters.<br />
<br />
This will not deter me from broadcasting other deals I find, but maybe I won't on certain FB groups.<br />

<br />I was going to title this post "I give up", but that has really negative connotations, and this is not necessarily a negative communication. But I have finally, without a doubt, surrendered to the torrent of ever-changing rules from GW this year.<a name='more'></a><br />I'm not even sure if "surrender" is a neutral enough word. I've just realized that I am not at a point in my life where I can manage to afford or even have the energy to collect a comprehensive set of rules for 40k. As I stated in <a href="http://hivezero.blogspot.com/2014/02/speed-painting-nurglings-little-ranting.html" target="_blank">this little rant from years past</a>, I am not a stickler for much in my gaming life, but I DO like to have a complete set of rules.<br /><br /><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiVQRnul9RluU_XWRSLXMKDwalbYa_bRCXGEME3bKFIp17cd0GkndOaeo7VrPavs-VU9VkAFxqwn43EsZswRZV26XESI784QFr3hd4pBEhqjN_56TeDKpJOPoVjZqa-mpHmlH50fsfZlzA/s1600/rules.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="213" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiVQRnul9RluU_XWRSLXMKDwalbYa_bRCXGEME3bKFIp17cd0GkndOaeo7VrPavs-VU9VkAFxqwn43EsZswRZV26XESI784QFr3hd4pBEhqjN_56TeDKpJOPoVjZqa-mpHmlH50fsfZlzA/s320/rules.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
I've almost got everything! Just a few more $60 books...</div>
<br />
But it's basically impossible now unless you literally own everything that GW puts out. I was probably the only person on the Internet that was excited to see the Age of Sigmar rules. It felt like GW was going to start putting out free only codices and data sheets for 40k as well, but that is not to be.<br />
<br />
So now we have a meta that has "most" of the rules, and we often rely on the same sites for information, which trickles down into creating similar lists and recursively stagnating the meta. This, combined with my FLGS's complete lack of 40k activity and the rise of other con-level game systems, has me making a drastic personal decision.<br />
<br />
I'm no longer going to chase the complete set of rules. I'm not longer going to try to min max my lists (I was never really a fan of that any way). I will not attempt to play 40k tournaments. I will not agonize over which models I <i>should</i> get over what I think is cool. I'm done with this race.<br />
<br />
What I <i>will</i> do in 40k is <b>finish painting the models that I actually own.</b> I have about 2k in DE, 2.5k in SM, 2.2k in GK and 2.5k in CSM that I need to get painted. I was psychologically crippled by analysis paralysis, but no longer. I'm equipping the models as I see fit. If later, I find that I want to play competitively, I will reevaluate and buy what I need to.<br />
<br />
On the FLGS front, I will most likely get in a few games of either Warmahordes or Malifaux, or maybe even X-Wing. Although I really enjoy all of these systems, the fluff of 40k dominates in my mind like no other system.<br />
<br />
At home, I plan to devise some custom scenario-based games of 40k...larger than Killteam...probably 1200-1500 points, with lopsided objectives. I'm going to use GW's 'living document" approach to rules as they were intented: for highly personal games based on your existing models.<br />
<br />
So expect many more painting posts in the next few months.<br />
<br />
How do you keep up with the ever-growing, ever-morphing rules and data set?<br />
<br />

<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgeJZEF3lba_BtnQp_PAvO2QFyDtFTB65j_lea6BatVLxnkkYohznKDVuvK0ROIeIRt-1nATkF9qQGe9ah0bD5qugRf-w34085o6Iupnw7Wj137B2gcEYKFiG7vzqR1SHG1J5bHgafV28I/s1600/BN40k.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="150" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgeJZEF3lba_BtnQp_PAvO2QFyDtFTB65j_lea6BatVLxnkkYohznKDVuvK0ROIeIRt-1nATkF9qQGe9ah0bD5qugRf-w34085o6Iupnw7Wj137B2gcEYKFiG7vzqR1SHG1J5bHgafV28I/s400/BN40k.jpg" width="400" /></a></div>
<br />
If you've been online today and surfing 40k sites, I'm sure you've seen the breaking news: GW is going start selling model kits as, well, model kits. It's actually a pretty smart move on their<br />
<a name='more'></a>part. They are old molds, and they are being repurposed for a market that may not care/do not know their relevance or significance.<br />
<br />
<table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center;"><tbody>
<tr><td style="text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhhzp3z5b9A3hFwTYFeAm5TYU4bEtator8l_Wv-RHNNCwi4REa-03jYnosILP2zCX0AhDz6o-AwuX3hpxTKaKZ427SK4jo4zIvqPTsur0Rf-vWSBtrYFSb9ciTlv4NnTCM9sGfAZKtj6lc/s1600/models.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><img border="0" height="400" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhhzp3z5b9A3hFwTYFeAm5TYU4bEtator8l_Wv-RHNNCwi4REa-03jYnosILP2zCX0AhDz6o-AwuX3hpxTKaKZ427SK4jo4zIvqPTsur0Rf-vWSBtrYFSb9ciTlv4NnTCM9sGfAZKtj6lc/s400/models.jpg" width="297" /></a></td></tr>
<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">Image credit: Tiny Plastic Spacemen and others.</td></tr>
</tbody></table>
It's all going to depend on the price. Will they be discounted from retail at the participating locations to be cheaper than the corresponding gaming version, which would cause a buying frenzy, or are they going to gouge unsuspecting non-40k model builders? Either way, I really like that they are being smart about utilizing obsolete (or just older) molds. The colored plastic is neat as well.<br />
<br />
I'm willing to bet that we may see these (in the US) at Hobbytown USA, Hobby Lobby, Michaels, and maybe even Barnes & Noble, Toys R Us and Walmart.<br />
<br />
I'm seeing a lot of complaints online about GW's intentions. I'm not sure that it even matters.<br />
<br />
<table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center;"><tbody>

<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">Image credit: Tiny Plastic Spacemen.</td></tr>
</tbody></table>
<br />In my opinion, this is a smart move to attempt to diversify their customer base. But I'm in the minority about it, apparently.<br /><br />Unknownnoreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2100642048696971643.post-92194865721367363932016-01-08T11:20:00.000-06:002016-01-08T11:52:00.326-06:00INCREDIBLE DEAL ALERT!<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

I have no idea whether this is an error on amazon's part, but these brushes are normally over $70.00US. But for the past two days they<br />
<a name='more'></a>have been priced directly from Amazon at around 18 bucks plus tax. I have Prime, so two day shipping is free. In case you don't already know, these brushes are highly regarded by miniature painters. <a href="http://www.amazon.com/gp/offer-listing/B00YEMI8ZY/ref=dp_olp_new?ie=UTF8&condition=new" target="_blank">Buy them before they figure it out!</a><br />

Jake over at Ex Profundis wrote an interesting article over the summer about Age of Sigmar and its implications, but today was my first time seeing it. <br />
<a name='more'></a>He gives some fascinating analysis, and whether you agree with it or not, it's well-written and thought provoking. <a href="http://www.exprofundis.com/age-of-sigmar-and-the-death-of-high-fantasy/" target="_blank">Check it out.</a><br />
<br />
I finished my first "1 Point per Day" model, Master Tormentor Morghoul. I'm not super happy with it...I should have prepped it better, but what can you do. Metal models always lose paint as I get into the process, but I've got a Bronzeback to work on next, so it will be airbrush time!!<br />

<div style="text-align: left;">
Happy New Year, everyone! ZeroNyne here. Yes, I've been pretty much off this blog for about 9 months. Real life is hectic, and as is natural sometimes, the blog started to fall away. But no longer will this site be neglected! The goal is two posts (or more) per week. Since I don't really consider relinking or sharing someone else's blog as a post, I'll have my work cut out for me in the new year.</div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
So, have you made any resolutions? I have.</div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
</div>
<a name='more'></a>But most of them are very personal or have to do with my other love, music. In terms of miniature wargaming, I have two resolutions. First is to paint 365 points of Warmahordes this year. This is in conjunction with a Facebook group...let me know if you want to join. They actually raffle off prizes for people who stay on track, so you may be interested.<br />
<div style="text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
I also have a resolution to reorganize my work space. I worked on it last week, and I will show pictures soon. Maintaining it will be the challenge. These quarterly "spring-cleanings" are getting to be a drag.</div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
Speaking of which, have you seen this video that's gone viral? </div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<iframe width="320" height="266" class="YOUTUBE-iframe-video" data-thumbnail-src="https://i.ytimg.com/vi/NRLBHXp5OBk/0.jpg" src="https://www.youtube.com/embed/NRLBHXp5OBk?feature=player_embedded" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen></iframe></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
It's an amazing little cabinet, and I'm sure you could see some conversion opportunities with this thing to make it more miniatures-friendly. Also, the way it's spec'ed out, it would cost roughly $1500.00 (if you could actually get one...they are sold out of their production run). It might seem steep, but the intended customer for something like this would have it in a highly visible area, so aesthetics are a major concern. I personally think that it's worth every penny for the application for which it is designed. I was hoping for a metal option with more of a toolbox look and feel, and what do you know:</div>

Up to 7D6" movement ignoring all terrain with ten attacks? Wow.<br />
<br />
I am really looking forward to<br />
<a name='more'></a>this supplemental codex release. It's been an expensive two months for me, as I collect Grey Knights, Necrons, Blood Angels, and Dark Eldar. I've always loved Harlies, and I'm glad that they are getting a dedicated demidex. The aesthetic of the solitaire is not something I like, but I'm not complaining. I'll figure out how to convert it.<br />
<br />
I really hope Sisters are on the roadmap.Unknownnoreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2100642048696971643.post-7223053894824709512015-01-07T11:39:00.001-06:002015-01-07T11:41:06.533-06:00Corsec Magnet Applicator<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<br />
Once in a while, I will stumble across a product that solves a minor chronic problem so elegantly that I can't figure out why I hadn't looked for it before. These are not wholly innovative gadgets; rather, they are things that have existed, but I just had no idea since it didn't fall within my tiny sphere of attention. I want to show you one of these products.<br />
<br />
<a name='more'></a><a href="http://corseceng.com/" target="_blank">Corsec</a> is a company that makes ancillary products for wargames. Like Litko and GF9, they have laser cut tokens and templates, gaming mats, etc. But slightly buried in their site I found this gem today:<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEga9xKSsqEsYfb-RfQMGRBdAJRgn6YJVQm0xjOwzX7h2JGZpAmDTV3S470RKKGJmTm53ZHZZFCIYqXu7-JI_VDMR91nKBfonFffqHCcmR-pYCyN83tv9-wLESqzACln3OvVY1EFG8OvxD0/s1600/magnet+applicator+1.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEga9xKSsqEsYfb-RfQMGRBdAJRgn6YJVQm0xjOwzX7h2JGZpAmDTV3S470RKKGJmTm53ZHZZFCIYqXu7-JI_VDMR91nKBfonFffqHCcmR-pYCyN83tv9-wLESqzACln3OvVY1EFG8OvxD0/s1600/magnet+applicator+1.jpg" height="400" width="397" /></a></div>
<br />
If like me, you own more than three or four armies and are currently riding the tsunami of changes occurring in the 40k meta right now, magnetizing weapon loadouts can be your savior and your friend. They are also a practical measure to prevent flight stand breakage. But rare earth magnets, especially tiny ones, are tricky to work with and place. I use a steel rod to place my magnets in difficult or tiny areas, but the magnets adhesion to the rod is often stronger than its adhesion to the greenstuff, which leads to some tricky finger gymnastics. Enter the Magnet Applicator Tool:<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<iframe allowfullscreen='allowfullscreen' webkitallowfullscreen='webkitallowfullscreen' mozallowfullscreen='mozallowfullscreen' width='320' height='266' src='https://www.youtube.com/embed/ECbtOKJvdC0?feature=player_embedded' frameborder='0'></iframe></div>
<br />
Genius. I see that there are many other versions of this, but at eight bucks, why not support a gaming-oriented company?<br />
<br />
Now if there were only a shoehorn that I could use without bending... :)<br />
